The fact that anyone could possibly survive at all a last-ditch emergency-glide into buildings tells about how skilled the pilots were, in my opinion.

I attempted similar landings in flight simulators with nothing at stake, and I think the pilots were gliding as a result of complete loss of power in all engines, and I could tell that the pilots made an intentional attempt to land in one sole building with the least horizontal velocity (you can clearly see the nose up in the final seconds), which is different than runway landing.

Sadly, there probably was nowhere to emergency-land, and in such scenarios, any survivor at all is miraculous.

On the topic of dual engine failure, I seem to remember there is something unique about the 787 in that because of the electronics, it's possible to start both engines at the same time (vs other models, say the a330, where engines are started one at a time)? Is it a possibility that this system which starts two engines simultaneously , can malfunction and cut them off simultaneously?

**Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2015-09-07**

I came across this and was curious others' opinions. This was issued by the FAA in 2015 as a procedural remedy for a then-software bug affecting 787s. It required full electrical deactivation every 120 days by operators.

In the 787, each engine has four generator control units (GCUs) which manage and regulate electrical power. The GCU software had a counting feature that, if after 248 consecutive days without a complete shutdown (i.e. reset), would cause all four GCUs to shutdown at the same time, leading to a complete loss of AC power. System logic would then revert to backup power and the RAT would deploy.

Diving deeper, each engine is equipped with a Permanent Magnet Alternator (PMA), which is mechanically driven by the engine itself. This lets the PMA generate power independently of the aircraft's main electrical system. However, the PMAs only powered one system during total loss of AC power: FADEC. Full Authority Digital Engine Control, or FADEC, controls every aspect of a jet engines operation.

Suppose now a 787 has a total electrical failure: the RAT deploys to produce AC power for the main busses while FADEC reverts to being powered by the PMAs, although now isolated. This would mean that for a period of \~5 seconds (the time from loss of all AC power through RAT deployment, spin-up, power generation, and system re-energization), pilots would have no abilility to send thrust commands to the engines.

So then, what thrust setting would the engines default to during this transition?

The fail-safe operational mode, called 'last valid thrust command', would revert to the **last commanded thrust setting prior to the failure**.  Considering this crew had recently taken off, that setting would likely be TOGA.

In 2018, the FAA issued a superceding **AD 2018‑20‑15** to resolve **AD 2015-09-07**. It mandated all operators install a GCU software update (Service Bulletin (SB) B787‑81205‑SB240063‑00), which rectified the issue and no longer required operators to power-cycle every 120 days.

Now, time for conjecture ...

For those who have flown the 787, or perhaps are privy to these ADs, have worked on or around them,  know someone who does, or anyone else for that matter, my question becomes:

*Under what circumstances could a 787 experience a total AC power failure and the engines revert to a fail-safe mode with a thrust setting less than last commanded? Be it idle in this case?*

Ah yes. Day 2 post a horrific and seemingly crazy crash with video evidence. It’s always fun, or maddening. Or a little of both. 

The amount of noise about the undercarriage is interesting.  Planes (especially heavies) will often keep their gear down longer after take off when they are in an environment where it is nearly 40 degrees Celsius, where they’ve made at least a decent backtrack and taxi (you know taxiing = riding the brakes). All things that applied here.  This way they cool hot brakes better before nesting them in an bay with all kind of pipes pushing flammable things like hydraulic fluid. 

Not that this should matter much as they clearly had massive issues from the moment they lifted off and gear surely wasn’t top of mind…..nor could it possibly be if they were going to keep it down a while. 

Same thing with flaps….crazy we are still debating this.  The engines at least powered back, likely fully shut if they were power out like the one survivor reported.  This is where the answers on this tragedy is going to lie. And it’s going to take a while to get there. 

But….its day 2 after an accident. And so much I see is unfortunately on par. Have at it.

It kind of explains everything. Use of entire length of runway, the wording of mayday(loss of thrust), ram deployment etc.

For people who think they raised the flaps instead of gear, check this video out and ask yourself it that theory makes sense. 

From the pilot calling rotate to gear up is like 7 seconds. 

The gear lever is right in front of you. 

The flaps are right by the pilot's left arm, there's no way they're not going to notice you changing the flaps. And the call for flaps 1 comes about 40 seconds after rotate.

I've watched several videos of the 787 RAT deployed, it has a very characteristic sound, and can most certainly be heard over the engines because of how loud it is.

Cross referencing with AI171, the sound is almost the exact same, I'm certain the RAT was deployed (could be due to both engines failing, in which case there's nothing the pilots can do) Keep in mind that this same aircraft had a history of engine issues as reported by former crew.

TIL there was another flight 171 that crashed in a very similar manner to AI 171.

This incident happened in 1976, the Sud Aviation Caravelle lost power to engine no. 2 and crashed shortly after take off, killing everyone on board. Indian Airlines later merged with Air India, which basically means that Air India was running the flight number of a crashed plane from their own fleet (usually when planes have fatal incidents, airlines retire the flight number, don't they?)

P.S. I am in not way implying this was anything more than a coincidence, or that Al 171 itself had an engine failure. I'm just amazed at the odds of the flight number being the same and the manner of the planes crashing being very similar too, especially because they are both from what is now the same airline.

On the “undercarriage being down for longer” theory 


1. The Dreamer backtracks the runway fully rather than an intersection departure (FR24 issued a statement that confirms this). 

2. Bare in mind, a high OAT at Ahmedabad plus a potential 30-40 kt backtrack plus braking at the end means marginally hotter brakes, hence the need to keep the gear down longer. All still well within company SOP to keep the gear down longer than usual. 

3. But the most obvious reason: Is DUAL ENGINE FAILURE/SHUTDOWN shortly after takeoff (as evidenced clearly by the RAT deployment) which means no time to even focus on the gear retract. We’re talking barely 5 seconds or so after takeoff and with T-15 seconds to impact, the pilots just barely had time to to try to maintain positive attitude (in vain) and issue out a mayday call. 


The high ambient temp means thinner air density. The Dreamliner is literally going to lose more lift by having those barn door gear doors just open. Best to leave them down. 

And, no the pilot monitoring DID NOT mistake the gear lever for the flap lever. One is located well away from the other and I mean WELL AWAY from the other. Think you’re at Heathrow holding the gear lever, the flap lever would be at Gatwick so an almost impossible mistake to even make especially for the PM of his experience.
